The De Vos Family's Big "WHY" (Russ, Heather, Samuel--14, Lily--12 & Simon--11)
This website has been built to raise $1.6 million for the village of Leveque (La-Veck), Haiti, via the housing program of Mission Of Hope Hiati: BlueToBlock500...!!! Boom...Wow...I've just come right out and said it! But before I go any further, I want to tell you WHY we, the De Vos family, are embarking on this crazy adventure and WHY we are asking you to join us!
On November 16th, 2012, our family of 5 boarded a plane out of Seattle, and landed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti the next day. Our first family mission trip was with Mission Of Hope Haiti (MOH). We went with some fears and apprehensions, not knowing what to expect. Haiti, the Western Hemisphere's poorest country had, 3 years ealier, suffered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the capital city of Port-au-Prince that had pulverized the city, leaving 19 million cubic yards of rubble, 300,000 Haitians crushed to death under that rubble, and another 1.2 million without homes. Already in extreme poverty, the earthquake took it to another level. We arrived almost 3 years later, ready to serve in any way we could.
Despite the dire conditions (and we were tested daily!!) our week in Haiti, and working with Mission Of Hope Haiti, surpassed all of our greatest expectations. What we saw and experienced has permenantly impacted and altered our lives. Our hearts will forever be knit with the Haitian people and with MOH Haiti.
We are now back home in Seattle, but are unable to settle back into "normal life." As seems to be a trend right now, there is a "new normal" for us. We cannot be silent about what we saw and experienced.
We are bound and compelled by love for Jesus and the Haitian people to share what we now know with you, and ask you to JOIN US on an exciting adventure--BlueToBlock500--to build 500 homes for the Haitian families of Leveque, many of which are still homeless and in abject conditions.
This website is the 1st step in obeying the tug of God on our hearts to put feet to what we have seen, and to be a voice for Haitian families who are largely voiceless. It is our prayer that as you navigate this website, the vision for the Haitian people that God has given Mission Of Hope Haiti, and now to us, will grip you as well, and will move you to join us as God leads and prompts you!!
